We drove down to Portland on the 4th day of our trip.
It took us about an hour and a half. We had time before we could check in at our hotel, so decided to go downtown first. We parked our car near the train station that was the farthest from downtown.
First we went to Chinese Garden. It's a small place, but is very beautiful.
William was given a sheet of paper with things to find while at the garden, and had fun participating in the activity.
Then we went to Powell's Books, Brian's favorite bookstore. It's the largest new and used bookstore in the world.
There are 6 levels with many different rooms, including a big children's room and foreign language room. They have Japanese books as well. I found The little Prince in Japanese that is sold $10 in Japan, but cost $30 there! It was ridiculously expensive, so I just bought a $5 used book for William.
After we were done with the bookstore, we decided to head to our hotel. We got on the train, but at the next stop all the passengers were told to get off at the next station. Apparently there was a fire between the station and another station and they were not sure when the train could start running again. ugh! But luckily they provided us a bus that would go to the train stations beyond where the fire was, so we got on the bus (We could ride the bus with the train ticket. We didn't have to show it though. lol) We got off the station that was really close to our hotel, but since we had to go get our car and all our stuff, we rode the train from there to all the way to the last stop, then drove back. It was such a long day. From day 1 to day 4, we encountered traffic problems and that was very exhausting for us.
