明けましておめでとうございます！ A Happy New Year!

アメリカではまだ大晦日ですが，オバノン家より明けましておめでとうございます。2016年が皆さんにとって素晴らしい年となりますように。

It's still New Year's eve here in the US, but Happy New Year from the O'Bannons! I hope the new year will bring you much joy and happiness.

アメリカでは年末年始が日本とは全然違って年末という気がまったくしません。ブライアンも大晦日の今日まで仕事行きました。年始も平日であれば2日から仕事です。ここのところずっと体調不良で今晩年越しそば作れないかもしれないと思っていたけれど，やっぱり年越しそばなしで年を越すわけにはいかず，なんとか作りました。自分は調子が悪くておいしく味わえなかったけれど，それでも作ってよかったです。もう一年が終わってしまったなんて信じられない。

Here in the US, people don't really celebrate New Years. They don't really do anything on the New Year's eve or New Year's day. Like many people, Brian went to work today. And people start working on the 2nd if it's a weekday. :( I have been sick for a while and didn't think I could cook toshikoshi soba (year-crossing noodles), but I just had to have it. Since I was sick it didn't taste all that great, but I'm glad I cooked it. I can hardly believe this year is over.

これは昨日の夜の様子ですが，家族みんながわが家に集まってピザパーティーからの，今年亡くなったブライアンのお祖母ちゃんが所持していた数々の宝飾類などを分け合いました。わたしは全くネックレスとかの類に興味がなくて結婚指輪も家では外しているくらいなのに，なぜかたくさんもらってしまった。これからちょっとくらいおめかししようかしらね。

This is from last night, but family got together and had a pizza party. Then Brian's mom brought all the stuff her mom possessed - mostly jewelry, and we took whatever we thought we could use. I'm not interested in jewelry at all (I don't even wear my wedding ring at home), but somehow ended up getting many of them.

最後は子供たちで集まって記念写真。次にみんなそろうのはいつかなぁ。

Before we said good bye, we took pictures of all the children. Looking forward to getting together next time.

クリスマス Christmas

あんなに楽しみにしていたクリスマスがもう終わってしまいました。クリスマスの日は長～い一日でした。朝起きてまずツリーの下のプレゼントを3人で開けるだけで1時間かかりました。わたしは念願のたこ焼き器をもらって大満足♪みんなそれぞれたくさんのプレゼントをもらいました。朝ごはんにはブライアンが作ってくれたチェリーのスコーンをおいしくいただきました。

I can't believe Christmas is over! It was such a long day for us. We started out the day by opening presents under the tree and it took at least one hour. One of the things I got was a takoyaki (octopus balls) maker. I'm totally having a takoyaki party soon! We all got so many gifts. After the presents, we had cherry scones Brian baked. They were yummy!

3時ころからはブライアンの実家に家族の他のメンバーと集まってそこでまたプレゼントを開けて，それが3時間以上かかって，夕食を食べ始めたのは結局8時過ぎ！クリスマスが誕生日のブライアンの弟の誕生会もやったりしたので結局帰ってきたのは夜11時近く。ほんと長～い一日だったけれど家族みんなで楽しい時間を過ごしました。

In the afternoon, we went over to Brian's parents home to open more presents with other members of the family. It took us over three hours! By the time we started dinner, it was past eight! And Brian's brother's birthday was on Christmas day, so we had a birthday party afterwards. So it was almost eleven when we finally came home. It really was a long day but we had a great time with family.

そして今年もまた作りました！ツリーサラダ☆毎年太っちょのツリーになっちゃいます（笑）

I made a tree salad this year again. It always looks chunky. :)

プリスクールのクリスマス会 Pre-School Christmas Party

今日はウィリアムのプリスクールのクリスマス会でした。クリスマスまでのカウントダウン用のチェーンを作ったり，お菓子を食べたり，子供たちがこれまで学んできたことを発表したり（ウィリアムは後半半分集中力なくなってやってませんでした～），プレゼント交換をしたりしました。ウィリアムはパズルをもらって喜んでいました。

There was a Christmas party for William's pre-scchool today. The kids made Christmas chains, colored, had snacks, presented the things they had been learning, exchanged gifts, etc. William was excited to get a puzzle. 

人参スープ Carrot Soup

今晩は人参スープを作りました。図書館から借りてきたウィリアムの本に出てくるスープで，レシピが載っていたので作っていたいと思っていました。自分が人参嫌いだからどんなのができるか不安だったけれど，これがすんごいおいしかった！これ人参嫌いの人にいける！健康的だし！レシピにはなかったけれど生クリームとクルトンを乗せておいしくいただきました（＾ｖ＾）

I made some carrot soup for dinner tonight. The recipe was in the "Carrot Soup" book William had checked out from the library, and I had been wanting to make it. I don't like carrots, so I was skeptical about this soup, but it turned out super yummy! And so healthy! Highly recommended to those who don't like carrots! I put some cream and croutons on top (the recipe didn't call for them, but the soup tasted yummy with them). 

これは昨日の夜の神殿。久しぶりに夫婦で神殿行ってきました。クリスマスのライトとかあるかと思ったら何にもなくってちょっと残念～。

This was from last night. Brian and I went to the temple together for the first time in several months. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any Christmas lights or decorations. :(

消防署訪問 Visit to A Fire Station

 

 

今日はYMCAの早期幼児教育プログラムのグループで消防署を訪問しました。ウィリアムは楽しみにしていたはずなのに，消防署では消防士さんや消防車の近くに行くのを嫌がっていました。それなのに，帰る時間になって車に乗るときには帰るのが悲しくて自分のブランケット（慰め役）に顔をうずめてしまいました。わけわかんない～3歳児。笑　消防署行くのわたし自身初めてだったので，とても興味深くて良い機会になりました。

William and I went to a fire station this morning with the Early Childhood readiness program group. Before the visit, William was excited to go, but at the fire station, he didn't want to get closer to the fire fighters or fire trucks. But apparently he liked the experience because he started to be sad burying his face into his blanky. So hard to understand 3-year-old's mind. It was my first time to the fire station as well. It was very interesting and I was glad that I could have the experience. 

チキンドリア Chicken Doria

いつもはスーパーに買い物に行くときにメニューを決めてから行くのだけれど，先週は適当に頭で考えてなんとなく買って来てしまったから，今晩何を作ろうかすごく迷って，結局チキンドリアにしました。チキンドリアが横浜で生まれたとは知らなかった～。

I usually make meal plans for the coming week before going grocery shopping, but this last week, I just shopped without having a solid meal plans. So, I had a hard time deciding what to cook for dinner tonight, and ended up cooking some chicken doria. I had no clue that it was first made in Yokohama.

昨日作ったクッキー。ウィリアムは今日はおあずけでした。

I baked them yesterday. William couldn't have any today.

ところで今日はウィリアムがまったく食事を摂ろうとせず，朝ごはんも食べずにプリスクールに行き，帰ってきてからも何も食べずに，2時ころにようやく少しだけふりかけご飯を食べて，さすがにお腹がすいたようで，4時ごろお腹すいたと言うので前に食べて残したご飯をおにぎりにしてあげました。夕飯のドリアも一口でも食べたら後でチョコレート（とクッキーも）をあげると言ってみたけど全然ダメで，一応食べたけれどパンにバターと蜂蜜付けたのと，チーズを少し。今日は全然ちゃんと食べなかったので（いつもとさほど変わんないけど）お菓子類（チョコやクッキー）はおあずけとなりました。明日はどうなるか。。。

By the way, William refused to eat today. He went to preschool without breakfast, didn't want to have lunch after he came home, but got hungry around 2pm, yet only ate a little bit of rice. Then he got hungry again around 4, so I just made him a rice ball out of the leftover rice from earlier and he ate it. And at the dinner time, he refused to eat what I cooked (as usual). I had told him he could have a piece of chocolate AND a cookie if he took a bite, but it didn't work. I had also told him that if he didn't take a bite, he would get nothing. No chocolate, cookies, or anything else. So that's what he got. I wonder if he will eat better tomorrow. 

クリスマスツリー Christmas Tree

今日は午前中クリスマスツリーを買いに行きました。去年のツリーはもうちょっと高さがあった気がするけれど，今年は去年よりどこもツリーが値上がりしたのか，これより大きいのだと50ドル近くしたのでこれでいいとしました。写真にはないけれどポインセチアも買って，ようやく家の中がクリスマスっぽくなりました。そうそう，この間投稿したツリースカート，やっぱりあれでは味気なかったので，フエルトでポインセチアと西洋ヒイラギを縫い付けました。ヒイラギの方はまだつけてないところもあるけれど，また全部できたら載せます。

We went Christmas tree shopping this morning. It was a bit pricey compared to the last year. I think we had a bigger tree last year, but oh well. We also bought some poinsettias, and with those and all other Christmas decorations, our house finally look Christmasy. Oh, and you might remember the tree skirt I posted the other day. Yeah, the plain cloth. I decided that was too boring, and sewed on some felt poinsettias and hollies all around. The skirt looks much better now. I still have three more hollies to put on, so I'll post the picture when I finish it.

日本からの荷物 A Package From Japan

もうおとといのことですが，日本の両親から荷物が届きました。お菓子やその他の食べ物，ウィリアムのヒートテックのシャツやウィリアムのクリスマスプレゼントが入ってました。うれし～い♪一度箱を閉めた後でチョコパイ追加して詰め直してもらったりして両親にはお手数かけました！笑

We received a package from my parents in the mail two days ago. There were Japanese snacks, candies, other foods, William's thermo undershirts, and a Christmas present for William. This made my day! Thanks to my parents who had to open the box and repack the stuff again just because I asked them to add Chocopies in the box! lol

スペイン語レッスン Spanish Lesson

1か月くらい前から，同じ教会に集うメキシコ人の姉妹に週に一度スペイン語を教えてもらっています。今年はスペイン語か中国語のどちらを学びたいかすごく迷った末に中国語を勉強すると決めてロゼッタストーンも買ったのに，買ってしばらくしたらやる気がなくなって，というかやっぱりスペイン語がやりたくなって，勉強しています。いろんな表現を学んだり，単語を覚えたりするのは楽しいけれど，難しいと感じるときも多々あります。動詞などの活用が全然自然に出てこないし，英語や日本語と違って名詞を修飾する形容詞が前にこないで後ろに来たり（例：白い猫〔日本語〕＝white cat〔英語〕＝gato blanco〔スペイン語：ネコ，白いの順〕），同じ子供でも，男の子（単数）ならel niño〔エル・ニーニョ〕，女の子ならla niña〔ラ・ニーニャ〕，複数ならlos niños，las niñas，男の子と女の子が混じっていたらLos niñosになります。面倒くさいですよね！慣れてくると簡単に思えてきますけれど最初は戸惑います。まだまだ頭が混乱しそうなことは山ほどありますが，ここでやめておきます。次の週までの宿題は，数を数える練習（1から100万まで，苦笑），色，体の部位など。脳みそ破裂寸前です。。。

I started taking Spanish lessons about a month ago from a Mexican Sister in the same ward. At the beginning of this year, I decided to study Mandarin Chinese after much debate on whether to learn Chinese or Spanish. I bought Rosetta Stone and started studying Mandarin Chinese, but not too long after that, I got bored, or rather I wanted to study Spanish more. So I kinda switched and have been studying Spanish with the Sister, and also with duolingo. There are so many things about Spanish that are hard to understand, but it's fun to learn new vocabulary and phrases. It's hard for me to remember which words are feminine or muscular (I have a hard time with irregular ones) and change article (el, la, los, las). And sometimes grammar is different from English which makes me very confused. I have a lot to learn. This week's homework is to count numbers (1 to million), color, parts of body, etc. I feel like my brain will explode!

これも夕べの光景。ウィリアムがブライアンの上にブランケットをかけまくって温めてあげている？ところ。仕事から帰ってきて疲れているのに大変ですな，父親は。

This is from last night as well. William is keeping daddy warm by putting all his blankets on him. Being a daddy is one tough job - work outside home all day and play with the kid after working all day. 

クリスマスの準備 Christmas Prep

感謝祭も終わり，もうみんなクリスマスの準備にかかっています。我が家はまだサンクスギビングのデコレーションが飾ってあったので，そろそろと思ってクリスマスの飾りを引っ張り出してきました。リースを飾ったり，食卓のテーブルクロスを換えて，ストッキングを下げて，アドベントカレンダーも飾り，ネイティビティも飾り，残すはツリーを買ってオーナメントを飾り，ポインセチアを買って飾るくらいかな。今日新しくしたクリスマスのテーブルクロスで初の夕飯は，お好み焼きでした。まったくマッチしてない～（笑）残りの写真はまた今度。

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's all Christmasy everywhere. We still had Thanksgiving decorations out, but finally decided to put some Christmas ones out today. During the day, I put a wreath on our front door, and another one inside the house. I also put two ribbons under the lights in the front room, hung stockings by the fireplace, put advent calendar on a shelf, and changed the table cloth to Christmas one. And the first meal we had with the Christmas table cloth was Okonomiyaki. They totally match, right? lol We put some more decorations and nativity scenes out for the FHE activity tonight. The only thing we have to do is to get a tree and put ornaments, and buy some poinsettias. :) I'll post more pictures later.

今日は日曜だったので，いつものごとくCaldwellに行って家族とディナーでした。先日の感謝祭のときの残りのパイやデザートがたくさんあったのに加えて，わたしが持って行ったクッキーもあったので，本当に盛りだくさん。わたしは2種類のパンプキンパイとパンプキンケーキを食べました。かなりお腹いっぱいです。ところで今日はめっちゃ寒かったー！！！

We went down to Caldwell for family dinner this evening since it was Sunday. For dessert, there were so many leftover pies from Thanksgiving. Plus there were some pumpkin cake, and I brought cookies too. I had two kinds of pumpkin pies and a piece of pumpkin cake. I am sooo full! By the way, it was super freezing today!!

ラーメン＆チャーハン Ramen & Fried Rice

今日は3人で買い物に出かけて，ブラックフライデーセールでどこもものすごく混んでいました。ウィリアムの長袖シャツ3枚とジーンズ一本買っても15ドルで（シャツ一枚3ドル，ジーンズ6ドル），すごい得した気分でした（＾ｖ＾）やっぱブラックフライデーは安いんだ！と納得した瞬間でした。ところで買い物に出かけたときにものすごく寒くって，夕飯は絶対にラーメンが食べたい！って思って，先日買ってきたとんこつラーメンと，チャーハンのセット。やっぱラーメンいいね～寒い日は。

We went Black Friday shopping today. There were so many people everywhere, but I was able to get William three long sleeve shirts and a pair of jeans for only $15! I was on cloud nine! It was super cold while we were out, so I decided to have a hot ramen for dinner. Ramen and fried rice were just what I needed in this cold weather.

クリスマスツリー・スカート Christmas Tree Skirt

今日はブラックフライデー（感謝祭の次の日，あちこちのお店で大安売りがある）でしたが，外は氷点下だし，どこに行っても混んでいるだろうし，家族3人どこにも行かずに家で過ごしました。オンラインでもどこでもセールになっているのでちょろっと見てみましたが，結局何も買わず。暇を持て余していたので，クリスマスツリー・スカートを作りました。でも生木を使うため水をあげなくてはいけない関係で，スカートというよりもツリースタンドのマットという感じです。あんまりさえない色だけど，下に敷くだけだし，この布がちょうど家にあったのでこれでいいとします。

It was Black Friday today, but we stayed home and hung out all day. We don't like to go shopping for Black Friday because there are so many people at stores and we don't like the crowd. Plus it was below freezing today, so there was no way I could have gone outside! I thought of buying a pair of boots online, but shoes are hard to buy online you know, so didn't buy anything. I got kind of bored today and decided to make a Christmas tree skirt. It's more like a Christmas tree stand mat. We buy a real tree and have to give the tree water, so a tree skirt doesn't work well. It's not an exciting color, but this was the only fabric I had that was big enough to make a tree skirt, and it will just be underneath the tree and covered with presents anyway, so this is good enough.

これは昨日作ったガレットというクッキー。バターの味が濃厚でめっちゃおいしい～♪焼いたら生地がちょっと広がってしまったのでもうちょっと小麦粉がいるかな。またリベンジします。

These cookies are called galette (French). Love the butter flavor! They kind of came out flat, so I'll try to bake them again to see if I could make them look better. :)

感謝祭 Thanksgiving

今日は感謝祭でしたが，家族たちとの食事の写真は全然撮りませんでした。。。その代りというのも変だけど，午前中に公園に行ってクリスマスカード用の写真を撮りに行ってきました。すごく寒かったので，もう早く帰りたくって，これすごくいい！っていう写真がなかなか撮れなかったけれど，なんとか数枚まあまあなのが撮れました。これはクリスマスカード用に選んだやつじゃないけれど，撮った写真の一枚。

It was Thanksgiving today. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner with family and relatives, but I didn't take any pictures of the feast. But instead, here is one of the pictures we took at a park this morning for the Christmas card. This one is actually not the one we chose for the card, but one of the pictures we liked. It was freezing cold so it was hard for William to keep smiling. lol

パンプキンパイ Pumpkin Pies

今日はパンプキンパイを作りました。明日の家族・親族とのサンクスギビングディナーに持って行く必要はなくて，自分の家で食べる用に作ろうと思ったら，パイ3つ以上のフィリングができてしまい，一つは自分の家用，もう一つは結局明日のディナーに一つは持って行くことに。3つ目は最近隣に越してきた家族にあげました。そしたら後でお礼に旦那さんが手作りしたというファッジと，2種類のナッツのお菓子をくれました。全部とってもおいしい～♪パイあげてよかった（笑）パイはすでに食べてみて，とってもおいしかったです❤

I baked pumpkin pies today. Yah three of them! I just wanted to bake one for my family to have, but ended up having more than three pies worth filling, so I baked three of them. I wasn't assigned to bring a pie to Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, but decided to bring one anyway. And we are keeping one to eat, and the third one, I decided to give our next door neighbor who recently moved in, then they gave us some homemade (the husband made) fudge and two kinds of nuts treats in return! They were so yummy! I'm glad that I gave them a pie! lol Oh, we already tasted the pie and it was yummy!


ところで写真はないけれど，今日は朝からほぼ一日中雪でした。今年初めての雪かきをしました。明日あさってはものすごく寒くなるようです。運転も気を付けないと。

By the way, it was snowing most of the day today. I had to shovel the snow out of our driveway this evening for the first time this year. Weather forecast says it's going to be super cold this weekend. We have to be careful when we travel on the road.

なべ Nabe (Hot Pot Dish)

今日もめっちゃくちゃ寒くって，夕飯はなべ！いつもいくスーパーで白菜がいいのがなくって，ほかのお店にいったら，白菜がなく，白菜っぽいのがあったからこれは白菜と同じ？って店員さんに確認してかったけど，実際取り出して切ってみたらキャベツじゃん！うそつきー！どうりで見た目キャベツ見たいと思った。苦笑　もうそれしかないからキャベツで代用して，まあ食べれたけれどちょっとがっくり。明日も鍋の予定だけど，明日はキムチ鍋にする。そしたらキャベツもっといけそう。一玉じゃあ足りないかと思って二つもキャベツ買っちゃったから，来週は確実にお好み焼き，餃子，焼きそば食べるだろうな。

It was super cold again today, so nabe was the perfect dish for dinner to keep us warm! You are supposed to use Chinese cabbage for one of the ingredients but the one I had bought believing it was Chinese cabbage was actually a cabbage! I even asked the store staff if it was the same as Chinese cabbage because they looked like cabbage, but they had a normal cabbage as well. Oh well. We are having nabe again tomorrow, but I'll cook kimchi nabe. That probably go better with the cabbage. I bought two of those cabbages, so we'll still have lots of cabbage after tomorrow. I'm sure we'll be having Okonomiyaki, gyoza, and yakisoba next week.

ジューサー Juicer

同じ教会に行っている友達家族が引っ越しするので，いらない台所用品を処分しようとしてて，欲しい人がいればただでもらっていいということで，ジューサーをもらってきました。この中に野菜や果物を入れるとジュースになって出てくる仕組みになっています。最近これについて話していたところなので，ただでもらえてうれしい～♪

One of the families in the ward is moving soon and was trying to get rid of some of their kitchen stuff. One of them was a juicer and I got it for free! We were talking about juicers at family dinner on Sunday a few weeks ago and I kind of wanted it, so I'm happy that I got it even for free!

今日教会から帰ってきた後に，なぜか忘れてしまったけれどクッキーを作ることにして，カシューナッツのシュガークッキーを作りました。写真のアーモンドが載ってるのは，途中でカシューナッツがなくなってしまったので飾りだけ代用。なんとなく微妙なクッキーでした。

After we came from church, I somehow decided to bake cashew nuts sugar cookies. I know you see some almonds in the picture, but that's because I ran out of cashews and had to substitute almonds for the cashews. The cookies tasted OK, but could use some improvement.

ところで，なんだか今日はとても寒かった！朝起きたら（7時半頃），マイナス4度で，今週の感謝祭の次の日の金曜日の朝とかマイナス10度以下になる予報。もうブラックフライデーで買い物行くとかありえない！

By the way, it was really cold today. When I woke up this morning around 7:30, it was 24.8 F. It is predicted that it gets down to 13 F on this coming Friday morning (Black Friday)!! There is no way that I go out for shopping on that day!
