皆既日食 Total Solar Eclips

今日は皆既日食。ボイシでは90パーセントほどの部分日食しか見られないということで，少し足を延ばしてオレゴン州のオンタリオ市（45分ほど）まで行って皆既日食を見に行きました。
It was the day of total solar eclipse. Since we could only experience 90 percent eclipse in Boise, we drove to Ontario, Oregon (45 minutes away) to see totality. 


この日はオレゴンやボイシのあたりでも学校は休みになるほどの大きなイベント。ほかの州からも皆既日食を見るために各地のいろんな日食のスポットへと旅する人であふれていた様子。
In some parts of Oregon and Boise, school were out for the eclips. Many people traveled far to various spots of the eclipse. 


道路の混雑を避けるために朝6時過ぎに出発しました。7時過ぎには予定していた教会の駐車場に着いて3時間ほど待つことになったけれど，朝ごはんを食べたり，散歩してあるいたり，ウィリアムと本を読んだりとあっという間に時間は過ぎていきました。
We left home a little after 6 am to avoid a traffic jams, and arrived at a LDS church we were planning on watching the eclipse from after 7 am. We had to wait for 3 hours before eclipse started, but we had breakfast, went for a walk, read books with William, etc., and time went by quickly.

オンタリオでは10時10分過ぎに日食が始まりました。日食用の特別なサングラスをかけて太陽が月に覆われて行くようすを眺めました。
The eclipse started a little after 10:10. With our eclipse glasses, we could see the eclipse in action.

日食観察用の箱でもその様子が見れました。
 We could see it with the eclipse box I made as well.

少し太陽が欠けているのが分かりますか？

Can you see the moon covering the sun a little bit?

だんだん太陽が月に覆われて，気温が下がり，あたりが暗くなってきて，1時間後には月が完全に太陽を覆って夜明け並みの暗さ。教会の夜用ライトもオンになって神秘的な時間でした。
It was awesome to see the moon gradually covered the sun. The more it covered the sun the darker and colder it got, and the church night lights even came on. About an hour later, the moon covered the whole sun and it was just so awesome and mysterious. 

前回のアメリカから見れる皆既日食は1979年だったようで，次回は2024年。でも次回はテキサスとか遠くまで行かないと見れないので今回は特別な経験ができてよかったです。
The last total eclipse seen in the US was 1979, and the next one is in 2024. But we won't be able to see the totality unless we go to Texas or other far states, so I'm glad I could have this special experience today.
